Janice Scull is a painter and paintmaker living and working in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MA in Printmaking from The University of the Arts London. Her work has been exhibited in group shows in LA, London, Seoul, and New York.
Janice Scull s work plays with the physicality of paint, the thin translucency of washes, and the layering of imagery from a variety of sources. Images sometimes get lost in the process. Painted so they appear to be floating on lush and layered backgrounds the women in her most recent series are all victims of fate. They are falling, fainting, and are tormented by fear. These surrealist narratives speak of the female experience as vulnerable disempowered entities.Â
